David Bowie identified as ‘gay’ before marrying a woman

Prior to his passing, David Bowie had been married twice and experienced one divorce.

His first wife was Angie Bowie, but before they exchanged vows, the singer made a surprising disclosure about his sexuality. Learn more below.

English singer-songwriter and actor David Bowie was renowned for his dramatic musical reinventions.

The icon was a prominent figure in the music world, and he continues to be considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

His accomplishments in the entertainment industry were recognized with numerous awards.

It was no surprise that someone who began his musical journey at a young age would achieve such success.

Even during his teenage years, David was distinct from his peers. Peter McFadden, a former high school classmate of the late singer, verified this when he said:

“In the school photo, you can see he wasn’t like the rest of us. He was already one cool guy; he stood out at age 15. I remember when he started learning the saxophone at around 12 years old.”

On June 16, 1962, at the young age of 15, David debuted with his first band, The Kon-Rads, as a saxophonist and occasional vocalist.

Under the guidance of the band’s agent, Eric Easton, The Kon-Rads performed in low-key local bars.

In 1963, one of David’s teachers, Owen Frampton, introduced him to Nevin D. Hirst, a Bond Street Advertising Agency.

He joined the company as a junior visualizer while continuing to pursue his passion for music.

In 1964, David joined The King Bees as a vocalist and made his TV debut with the band in June that same year.

He made appearances on various shows, and over time, the legend began to release his songs, becoming an icon for numerous generations.

David’s first wife was American actress and journalist Angie Bowie. They first met in 1969 at a show in the Roundhouse, where David was performing.

Unbeknownst to David and Angie, they were both dating the same man, who ultimately agreed to sign David after Angie threatened to leave him otherwise.

Eventually, David and Angie’s relationship progressed.

Despite their shared boyfriend, the singer was determined to take their relationship to the next level, deciding to marry Angie. When asked about his decision, David stated:

“I realized that she’d be one of the very few women I’d be capable of living with for more than a week.”

Regrettably, David’s decision to marry Angie wasn’t based on love. In fact, before they got married, he confessed to his ex-wife that he wasn’t in love with her.

Nonetheless, on March 19, 1970, the couple got married. On May 30, 1971, David and Angie welcomed their son Zowie.

The family of three lived happily and avoided the spotlight until January 22, 1972.

During an interview with Melody Maker on that day, David disclosed to the world that he was gay.

A few years later, Angie would reveal on the “Joan Rivers Show” that she had once found David and Mick Jagger in bed together, nkd.

However, Angie and David remained married for a few more years until their divorce in 1980.

After their separation, David gained full custody of their son. Angie claimed she intentionally left Zowie with David to help him overcome his drug addiction.

Following the divorce, the former couple never spoke again. Angie admitted that her life with David was shaped by forces beyond her control and comprehension.
