Congressman pleads guilty to ‘sexting’ a teen girl

Ex-congressman Anthony Weiner has confessed to sending sexually explicit material to a 15-year-old girl, agreeing to a multi-year prison term for the crime.

Weiner accepted a plea deal in a New York court, stating that he would not challenge a prison sentence ranging from 21 to 27 months.

As part of the agreement, the judge ordered Weiner to register as a sx offender and forfeit his iPhone.

During the proceedings, Weiner broke down in tears as he apologized to the teenager involved in the explicit text exchanges.

The former Democratic congressman admitted, “I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse.”

Once a rising political star, Weiner’s career was derailed in 2011 when it was revealed that he had shared explicit images with multiple women.

His attempts at a political comeback in 2013 were again thwarted by another sexting scandal.

In September of the previous year, a North Carolina girl informed a tabloid news site that she had engaged in lewd text conversations with Weiner over several months, prompting an FBI investigation.

The allegations gained significance as Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, was an aide to then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The FBI’s examination of Weiner’s laptop led to the discovery of numerous emails between Abedin and Clinton.

This finding prompted FBI Director James Comey to announce, just days before the election, that the bureau was reopening its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

Although Comey later stated that the emails contained no new information, Clinton partially attributed her election loss to Republican Donald Trump to Comey’s announcement.

In court on Friday, Weiner maintained his composure while answering over a dozen administrative questions before a full courtroom.

However, his emotions surfaced as he started reading a prepared statement admitting to his crimes. After just six words, he broke down in tears.

Weiner continued to read his emotional confession, which included apologies to the victim, as well as his family and friends.

He admitted to having “compulsively sought attention from women” on social media since he became a congressman in 1999 and continued doing so until the first half of 2016.

Weiner acknowledged that his “destructive impulses” had caused significant harm to his loved ones and ruined his dream of public service.

As he read the statement, he struggled to hold back tears while discussing the crime, which he labeled “as morally wrong as it was unlawful,” and its impact on the victim and his own life.

Although the charges could result in up to 10 years of imprisonment, Weiner is expected to serve less time due to the plea agreement.

Weiner expressed remorse for his actions, saying that his world “fell apart” amid the scandal, which received extensive media coverage.

He apologized to the 15-year-old girl with whom he shared sexual images, admitting that he had done the same with adult women.

Last fall, Weiner finally confronted the extent of his problem, stating, “I, I had hit bottom.”

He entered a treatment program, which he continues to follow, and found the courage to take an honest look at his flaws through therapy.
