Bryan Singer Accused of Sexually Abusing Four Underage Boys: Report

A shocking new piece on The Atlantic sheds further insight on the sexual assault allegations leveled against filmmaker Bryan Singer.

On Wednesday, the paper published a long exposé about Singer in which four alleged victims — one named and three unnamed — claim to have had improper sexual encounters with the filmmaker while they were teenagers.

Singer allegedly abused a 13-year-old boy, according to one witness. Others recount gatherings where Singer persuaded senior Hollywood executives and adolescent boys to have sex with him while they were between the ages of 15 and 18. A man whose story was known before the Atlantic piece said Singer assaulted him at a party in 2003, when he was 17.

Similar claims resurface again and over again, spanning decades. Some involve other well-known Hollywood figures, such as Marc Collins-Rector, a close friend of Singer’s who worked on the Digital Entertainment Network with him (DEN).

Cesar Sanchez-Guzman’s charges in the lawsuit he filed against Singer late last year are also detailed in the story.

Sanchez-Guzman discussed the alleged incident with Singer in 2003 with ABC News. “As we were walking down the hall he shoved me into a room and took advantage of me,” he said. “I didn’t know what to think or say. All I just could think was I just wanted to get off that yacht and run home as soon as possible.”

Singer earlier stated through his attorneys that he “categorically denies these allegations” and that he “will vehemently defend this lawsuit to the very end.”

The article was written after Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and grossed over $800 million worldwide.

Victor Valdovinos, for example, claims that he was 13 when his father dropped him off on the set of Singer’s film Apt Pupil, where he was supposed to be an extra. He stated a staff worker directed him to strip down to his underwear and wrap himself in a towel. Singer frequently entered the room to molest him while he waited nude in a locker room for hours, Valdovinos told the Atlantic.

“He remembers dropping him off for the filming and thinking that perhaps his son would become an actor,” Valdovinos’ father recalled, according to French and Potter. Valdovinos did not appear as an extra in Apt Pupil, according to Singer’s counsel.

Another alleged victim, identified only as Ben by The Atlantic, described the director as a boundary-breaker: “He would stick his hands down your pants without your consent. He was predatory in that he would ply people with alcohol and drugs and then have sex with them.” But, Ben clarified, “it wasn’t a hold-you-down-and-rape-you situation.”

Singer allegedly “seduced” Ben during one of the director’s famed pool parties, where they had oral sex, according to Ben. He claims he was 17 or 18 at the time, but he can’t recall the specific date. Similar claims resurface again and over again, spanning decades.

In the aftermath of his assault, another complainant, identified only as Eric, claims he attends frequent Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. “There’s a bunch of us. It’s like, ‘You were one of Singer’s boys? Me too,” he says, referring to a group of other California males who had similar experiences about Singer.

The men who told the Atlantic that Singer assaulted them described conditions that made them particularly prone to victimization: youth, poverty, a lack of supporting family bonds, or a combination of the three. When he met Singer, one guy claims he had been booted out by his parents. Another claimed to have dropped out of high school and relocated to Los Angeles on his own.  Several others stated their families pushed them to be close to Singer in the hopes that he could help them advance in their careers.

Bryan Singer has replied to the assertions made in the Atlantic investigation, calling it a “homophobic smear piece” and disputing the claims:

“The last time I posted about this subject, Esquire magazine was preparing to publish an article written by a homophobic journalist who has a bizarre obsession with me dating back to 1997. After careful fact-checking and, in consideration of the lack of credible sources, Esquire chose not to publish this piece of vendetta journalism. That didn’t stop this writer from selling it to The Atlantic. It’s sad that The Atlantic would stoop to this low standard of journalistic integrity. Again, I am forced to reiterate that this story rehashes claims from bogus lawsuits filed by a disreputable cast of individuals willing to lie for money or attention. And it is no surprise that, with Bohemian Rhapsody being an award-winning hit, this homophobic smear piece has been conveniently timed to take advantage of its success.”

Singer’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, told The Atlantic that the filmmaker has never had intercourse with or had a preference for teenage guys. Singer has never been arrested or charged with a crime, according to the lawyer.

Singer was sued in 1997 for exploiting teenage male extras who appeared nude in his film Apt Pupil, and this isn’t the first time he’s been accused of sexual misbehavior. That lawsuit, as well as two others charging Singer of sexually abusing kids, were subsequently dropped. (Both of these examples were covered in The Atlantic’s piece, and one of Singer’s accusers from the set of Apt Pupil even spoke on the record about how the event harmed his life.)

Michael Egan filed a lawsuit in 2014, alleging that the director raped him when he was 17, but the case was dismissed. The man’s accusations, according to Singer’s counsel, are “unsubstantiated lies.”

A second complainant filed a sexual assault case against Singer later that year. Singer fondled him and tried to compel him to have sex when he was 17, the man said in the complaint. The charges were categorically refuted by Singer.
