Britney Spears Calls Out Paparazzi for “Embarrassing” Her by Distorting Her Body in Photos

Following her tearful statement last week about the status of her conservatorship, pop superstar Britney Spears asked photographers to stop snapping pictures that “distort” her body on Tuesday.

On her Instagram account, Spears uploaded a video montage synced to Lily Allen’s song “Fuck You,” which starts with a title board that says, “DOS AND DONTS if you are a pap, fan, or ANYONE in my space.” The next slide states, “Don’t talk to me while I’m texting. It’s Rude,” before transitioning to footage of the singer walking down the beach in a red bikini and surgical mask, to which she wrote, “This is my body!!! So stop messing with my pics and editing them to the point where it’s embarrassing!!!!” Spears then shared a TikTok video of a large audience at a Pride march singing “Oops I Did It Again” in unison, with the caption, “This is what fans & paps should be doing instead!!!”

“So being here in Maui is pretty crazy now … the paps know where I am and it’s really not fun !!!! It’s pretty hard going anywhere cause these silly faces keep popping up to take my picture,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I know my body is not perfect, but I definitely do NOT look like how they portray me. It’s rude, and it’s mean. So, paps, kindly F—K YOU AND F—K OFF,” the “Baby One More Time” singer said.

Spears talked passionately on June 23 about her conservatorship, which she has been under since her public breakdown in 2008. The conservatorship scenario has been “traumatizing,” Spears told a probate court.

“I have an IUD in my body right now that won’t let me have a baby and my conservators won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out,” Britney said before the court. ““It’s not OK to force me to do anything I want to do,” The “Stronger” singer has revealed that she intends to sue her family after claiming that she was forced to tour and take medicine, such as lithium, to regulate her mood.

“I’ve been in shock,” she added. “I am traumatized, You know, fake it till you make it, but now I’m telling you the truth. OK. I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, it’s insane and I’m depressed. I cry every day and the reason I’m telling you this is because I don’t know how the state of California can have all this written in the court documents from the time I showed up and do absolutely nothing.”

Everyone from ex-husband Kevin Federline to sister Jamie Lynn Spears to former Mickey Mouse Club castmate and one-time chart competitor Christina Aguilera has spoken out about the conservatorship in the last week, calling it “unacceptable” and wishing her well.

The following day, Spears sent a letter on Instagram to her fans and followers, claiming that the fairy-tale existence she seemed to live on social media was not genuine.

“I apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years … I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me,” she wrote.

Spears’ battle with the paparazzi over allegations that they regularly alter pictures of her body has lasted years. She released a two-minute video in June 2020 of herself going back and forth in front of the camera to Billie Eilish’s song “You Should See Me in a Crown.” The clip was intended to be a reaction to pictures of her riding her bike in the same clothing, showing supporters how different she really appears in comparison to those images.

“Don’t believe everything you read, hear, or see…..follow your heart…..remain open to change and educate yourself,” she said in the caption. In the summer of 2019, she also accused the paparazzi of employing Photoshop to make her seem overweight in photos sold to newspapers.

She shared videos of herself wearing the same attire as the initial press shots, saying, “Good morning, this is the day after me on my boat ride. Do I look any different today than yesterday? People always say people or celebrities cheat with their images, but never do they question the paparazzi for selling your pic that they have messed with!!!! This was all done within the same 17 hours!!!!” Sam Asghari, her boyfriend, also supported her, writing on the post, “The realest #lioness.”

The singer has been in the public spotlight for more than two decades, frequently under the harsh glare of swarms of paparazzi who have documented her every high, low, and in-between moment.

As shown by this year’s attention-grabbing documentary, The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears, the growth of tabloid press in the early 2000s resulted in Spears being pursued at every step in public, causing the singer anguish after the birth of her two boys. Despite the fact that the number of tabloid pictures of Spears has decreased over the years, Tuesday’s post demonstrated that the old scars have not healed.
