Avril Lavigne responds to conspiracy theory That She Died Years Ago and was replaced with a body double

Avril Lavigne has dismissed a conspiracy theory claiming she died years ago and was replaced by a doppelgänger as “weird.”

The Canadian singer talked with Kyle and Jackie O on Australia’s KISS 1065 over the phone on Wednesday, where they asked her about the complex theories that she’s been dead for over a decade and has been replaced by a doppelgänger who has continued her career.

Reports of Lavigne’s death began to circulate after her grandpa died in 2003. The singer, who was said to be close to him, was devastated by his death, leading some conspiracy theorists to assume she committed suicide herself. Lavigne was at the height of her stardom at the time, having released hit songs like “Sk8r Boi” and “Complicated” the year before. But stardom came with a harsh spotlight, prompting her and her team to hire a doppelganger to impersonate Avril in front of the paparazzi. They apparently found this in a girl named Melissa Vandella.

The hypothesis was spearheaded by a Brazilian site dedicated to solving mysteries, which gathered the ‘evidence’ over time. It claims to have conclusive proof that Avril Lavigne is no longer alive and that the Avril Lavigne that currently wanders the world is a fraud.

They support their allegation by claiming that her height, nose, and style have changed over her career. This, they believe, proves that two separate persons were involved.

Lavigne’s propensity to wear more dresses and feminine clothing as she grew older, frequently abandoning her punk flair, is used by supporters of the idea to justify the transition.

In 2017, a person on Twitter raised the stakes by laying down the proof that Melissa isn’t the original Avril. Most people believe that Avril’s shift in style, handwriting, and enigmatic song lyrics prove that she died. Some even claim Melissa’s actual identity is revealed in the album Under My Skin.

“What about, did you laugh at the rumors that you no longer exist and there’s a clone of you?” Jackie questioned during the interview.

“Yeah, some people think that I’m not the real me, which is so weird!’ she replied. “Like, why would they even think that?”

After the question was posed, the broadcaster mentions a “strange happening.” “Not only that, BUT what was incredibly strange and creepy was that as soon as Jackie asked this question, the phone line turned really weird!” they said. “Avril went a bit robotic, cut out and times, and even accidentally started pressing random buttons making a beep sound! Is it just a coincidence that things started going haywire with the line as soon as we asked about the Melissa theories? Or was someone doing it…”

While the actress did step away from the limelight for a period of time—five years in fact—it was mostly due to health problems, such as her Lyme disease diagnosis.

“I mean, I went down pretty hard,” Lavigne admitted. “So I always have to work at being healthy and keeping a good balance and taking care of myself… I’m much better. I have a life now and I was able to make a record and, you know, shoot a music video and I’m starting now to perform and promote the song…now I have a life.”

The ‘Sk8er Boi’ singer returned to music after a four-year hiatus after getting ill during her 2014 tour. She wrote an emotional return letter in September about “the worst years of her life.”
