Alice Eve is proud of her underwear scene in Star Trek

Alice Eve, known for her role as Dr. Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness, recently shared her thoughts on the controversy surrounding a specific scene in the movie.

In the scene, Eve’s character is seen changing clothes in front of Captain T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine.

Fans had labelled the scene as unnecessary and misogynistic, with Eve being commodified and objectified.

Despite the controversy, Eve enjoyed filming the scene and didn’t regret it.

She had worked hard to be fit for the scene and was fully prepared for it.

“The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me,” she said.

Damon Lindelof, the screenwriter of the movie, had apologized for the scene and admitted that he should have been more aware of the decisions taken when the subject of the matter is a barely clothed actress.

However, Eve didn’t mind the scene’s inclusion and was proud of it.

Eve also talked about the representation of women in science fiction and how they are shown to be strong, independent, and self-reliant.

Women in the genre are often focused on achieving a particular goal that doesn’t involve marriage, children, or a specific love interest.

They are leaders and powerful figures who can stand on their feet without the support of another person.

“I wanted to support a woman tackling the traditionally male subject matter. I loved her audacity. She had this grand vision she was determined to execute on a small budget. And she did. Sci-fi is cool because it shows powerful women,” Eve told Inverse.

“They’re not usually married with kids. They’re working for their passion.”

Eve wants to explore a world for women beyond the stereotypical terms and escape what can easily be labeled as the male gaze.

For her, Star Trek Into Darkness included a strong character who was not afraid of exposing herself physically and was confident enough to do so.

It’s not the first time that Eve has spoken about the representation of women in science fiction.

In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, she said that science fiction movies give women the chance to play strong roles that they might not get to play in other genres.

“It’s an opportunity to play a woman who is doing something, who has something to offer, who has a skill set,” she said.

Eve’s role in Star Trek Into Darkness was initially supposed to be a cameo, but it evolved into a more significant part.

Marcus is a scientist who helps the crew of the Enterprise in their mission to stop a rogue Starfleet officer.

Eve has also appeared in other science fiction projects like Men in Black 3 and Black Mirror’s “Nosedive” episode.

She will be seen next in the Apple TV+ series, Truth Be Told, alongside Octavia Spencer.
