Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane scenes were cut from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’
She recorded sequences for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier this year, dyeing her hair red to portray Mary Jane Watson, the superhero’s love interest.
However, in a recent interview with EW, she revealed that you’ll have to wait a bit longer to watch her performance. Because she was cut from the second film, her portion is now in the third, which either suggests it wasn’t that large to begin with and will be increased later, or everyone is simply seeing what works on the fly.
Woodley, who is best known for playing George Clooney’s daughter in The Descendants, had filmed three sequences for the sci-fi sequel.
Mary Jane Watson is Peter Parker’s wife and future childhood crush in the original Marvel comic books. Because the tale closely parallels the relationship between Andrew Garfield’s Peter and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, director Marc Webb decided to cut her from his second feature.

Webb described his choice, “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
“Of course I’m bummed,” Woodley told EW via e-mail, expressing her disappointment with the move. “But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”
Shailene only worked for a few days in late February and early March.
The planned storyline may confirm the long-held idea that Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey would be slain (like she was in the comics), with MJ serving as Peter Parker’s shoulder to weep his webby tears on.
On May 2, 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released globally. The third and fourth films are set to be released in June 2016 and May 2018, respectively, by Sony Pictures. The goal currently is to introduce Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but Woodley is unlikely to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and her part will have to be replaced.
