Kristen Stewart Was ‘Scared The Whole Time’ She Filmed ‘Underwater’, She’s Afraid of Water

Kristen Stewart attended the premiere of her latest film, Underwater, earlier this week, and revealed in a recent interview that she is actually afraid of water.

“I’m really scared of water,” Stewart, 29, told Us Weekly on Tuesday, January 7, during the Underwater special fan screening in Los Angeles.

“I’ve never done anything that I thought was going [to be] super easy or comfy,” she said of her role in the film. “So it makes sense that I chose this. But, like, in a literal sense, it’s ridiculous that I did this movie. Like, really ridiculous.”

The plot revolves around the aftermath of an earthquake that traps a six-person team stationed on an undersea research facility. To reach safety on another rig, the group must travel through the ocean bottom while being pursued by mythological sea monsters.

The Charlie’s Angels star can’t believe she made it through filming with the entire idea of Underwater based around being immersed in the sea.

“It was not fun. I hated it,” Kristen says. “I would usually not be allowed to say that. Cause you’re like, ‘Oh no, highlight the good parts at least.’ It’s a horror movie. It was awful. It was really hard. I was scared the whole time.”

Stewart is no stranger to venturing outside of her comfort zone for the sake of her work. During a September 2019 interview with Vanity Fair, the Still Alice actress spoke more about her early career.

“I think I’ve grown out of this, but I used to be really frustrated that because I didn’t leap willingly into being at the center of a certain amount of attention, that it seemed like I was an asshole,” the California native told the publication. “I am in no way rebellious. I am in no way contrarian. I just want people to like me.”

All of Stewart’s anxiety during filming will hopefully transcend to the big screen in the shape of an intense, horrifying performance that will please fans.

On Friday, January 10, Underwater will be released in cinemas.
