Britney Spears’ father Jamie agrees to step down as conservator

According to court documents, Jamie Spears has promised to resign as conservator of his daughter Britney Spears’ estate “when the time is right.”

In a petition with the Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, he offered to be removed from his daughter’s conservatorship if the transition is smooth and all outstanding issues relating to his actions as her conservator are resolved.

“Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the Court,” the filing said.

A judge in Los Angeles Superior Court denied a motion to continue a hearing to remove Jamie Spears as Britney Spears’ conservator last week.

Following the pop star’s public breakdown in 2008, he has been in that position ever since. A conservatorship is established when a court determines that an individual is unable to make decisions for themselves and appoints a legal guardian.

In a statement, Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart stated, “We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed.”

“We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.”

It is “highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” according to James Spears’ lawyers, who say there were no genuine grounds for his suspension or removal.

“Mr Spears continues to serve dutifully, and he should not be suspended or removed, and certainly not based on false allegations,” the petition said. His counsel requested that the petition for his removal be denied by the judge.

“There is no doubt that the Conservatorship saved Ms. Spears from disaster, supported her when she needed it the most, protected her and her reputation from harm, and facilitated the restoration of her career,” according to the petition.

It said that he was “the unremitting target of unjustified attacks.” However, “he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”

Jamie Spears defended his conduct as Britney Spears’ conservator in a court statement filed on Thursday, stating that he “has not coerced Ms. Spears to do anything.”

Following the departure of financial organization Bessemer Trust, Jamie Spears is presently the sole conservator of the singer’s estate.

Much of Thursday’s filing was directed at James Spears’ ex-wife, Lynne Spears, who, after years of little participation with the conservatorship, has recently begun defending her daughter in court.

Britney Spears has accused her father of “conservatorship abuse,” alleging that the conservatorship compelled her to work against her desire and limited her ability to marry or have another kid.

Gladstone Jones, a lawyer for Britney’s mother, Lynn Spears, reacted to the news as well. “Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother, is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down. Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost 3 years ago,” Jones said in a statement. “She has accomplished what she set out to do.”

Lynne Spears has been away from her daughter’s life for the most of the previous 12 years, according to James Spears’ lawyers, and she has been accused of exploiting Britney by releasing a book about her in 2008.

Britney Spears has testified in front of a judge twice in recent months, begging for her father’s legal authority over her to be stripped away. “I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse … I was always extremely scared of my dad,” she stated during the most recent hearing, on July 14th.

Since the conservatorship began in 2008, Jamie has had full authority over his daughter’s estate. His legal team claims that as a result of his decision, the estate went from being in debt to being valued at more than $60 million.
