Rose McGowan stumps for Larry Elder in California, Talks Race and Politics

At a campaign rally for Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder in Los Angeles on Sunday, Rose McGowan slammed the state of California, the Democratic Party, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

She said that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s wife sought to bury McGowan’s sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

McGowan, one of the most outspoken accusers of the former Hollywood mogul, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison in a separate rape case last year, said that the Democrats were all working together to defend him.

The activist and former actress denounced the Democratic Party, which she had previously supported, and urged California voters to “be brave, do something that’s weird—like maybe voting Republican, even though it will feel strange.”

As Elder claimed that the United States is the world’s “least racist” country, the actress and activist stood alongside him. Elder, who is black, slammed Al Sharpton, Black activists, and Democrats for supporting critical race theory and reparations, which he defined as “the extraction of money from people who were never slave owners to give to people who were never slaves.”

“Do I agree with him on every issue? No. So what?” McGowan said of Elder, according to the Daily Beast. “He is the better candidate. He is the better man.”

McGowan’s rambling address bounced between jabs at famous Democrats, sweeping condemnations of “the system,” and vague support for Elder. McGowan rambled on about apparently insignificant personal stories while railing against “the media,” which she claims has “smeared” her in the past. She addressed the reporters in the room, “So many of the people you work for are part of it, and you know it. And I don’t know why. Like, what is the game? Is it short-term power? Is it short-term gaining? What is so—why would you sell out your people, your citizens, yourself, your family, your loved ones, for what? For money? For the illusion of power? For the stranglehold you have on keeping people undereducated, underemployed, and terrorized by your government?”

McGowan explicitly referenced BLM, agreeing with Elder’s remarks.

“People don’t want to hear that… They want to hear that the more we micro label each other, the better we’ll be,” McGowan said. “The reality is, today, I challenge this state, I challenge these voters, I challenge the media, back up. Be human first, vote for humanity.”

In a statement, a representative for Siebel Newsom blasted McGowan’s accusations.

“It’s disappointing but not surprising to see political opponents launch these false attacks just days before the election. Their limited correspondence has been strictly as fellow survivors of sexual assault and in Jennifer’s former capacity leading the Representation Project, an organization that fights limiting gender stereotypes and norms,” the statement said.

Elder “might know more than you,” she cautioned White supporters of Black Lives Matter.

Despite the fact that Elder is considered the front-runner among the wide field of opponents in Tuesday’s recall election, recent surveys suggest Newsom will win.
