Following Helen McCrory’s passing last year, Damian Lewis paid a heartfelt tribute to her.

In April of last year, the adored actress, 52, tragically died of breast cancer.

The Billions and Homeland star hit the stage at the National Theatre in London on Tuesday for an event called “A Poet For Every Day of the Year.” The event, which was inspired by Allie Esiri’s book of the same name, included poetry readings from McCrory’s close friends.

“This evening is dedicated to her and it’s perfect, because Helen loved the National Theatre. ​One person whose thunder would absolutely not be stolen, was Helen McCrory. ​You could try, but it wouldn’t work,” Lewis said to the crowd, according to The Times.

The event, which was dedicated to McCrory, will be streamed on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel on March 3 in honor of World Book Day.

McCrory was well-known for her parts in the Harry Potter films and the Peaky Blinders television series. After meeting on the set of Five Gold Rings at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2003, she and Lewis married in 2007.

“We dedicated the evening to Helen, and Damian said a few words, but we just wanted to get on and do the show,” Esiri told the Daily Mail.”It’s what she would have told us to do – ‘OK, enough already, get on with the show!’ She loved poetry and I think she would have been pleased to be kind of here with us. It felt right.”

“Damian and Helen really helped to get poetry out to people,” she continued. “When you are stuck at home with Covid but can’t quite take on a novel, a lot of people have been turning to poetry. Tonight we chose poems that will hopefully have chimed with people who have been going through a lot over the last two years. Learning from adversity is something many people have experienced over the past two years during the pandemic. My mantra during this difficult time has always been to tell myself ‘everything is going to be all right’.’

A video of McCrory delivering a poem from a past incident was also shown during the event. Lewis ended the gathering by reciting a passage from “Everything is Going to Be All Right,” a poem by Irish poet Derek Mahon.

The couple’s two children, Manon, 15, and Gulliver, 14, were also present during the poetry reading.

Last year, the actor stated about his wife, “She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air and thank you.”

Lewis wrote an emotional tribute for The Sunday Times in April, in which he pondered on the life of his “brilliant” wife.

“Many people have spoken about her career and many more will, so that’s where I’ll leave it, because it strikes me that two things are happening this weekend: an outpouring of grief and shock, and a celebration of Helen McCrory the actress from fans everywhere, and of Helen the person,” Lewis wrote. “And that’s who I want to talk about.”

He went on to say, “Helen was an even more brilliant person than she was an actress. She was a people person, sure. ‘I’m much more interested in who I’m with than where I am,’ she would say, and innately wanted to share. But she also lived by the principle of kindness and generosity. That you put these things out into the world to make it better, to make people feel better.”
