Matt Damon confirms He’ll Return as actor Loki in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe welcomes Matt Damon back!

The 50-year-old actor announced that he will reprise his role as Loki in Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth entry in the Thor film franchise, while talking on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

Damon said when asked if the planned cameo was a secret, “I don’t know if it’s secret or not, though everybody knows.”

“I went down there [to Australia] to shoot,” Damon confessed on The Jess Cagle Show. “We were kind of reprising a cameo that Luke Hemsworth and I did in the last one.”

“And we had a ball, and so Taika [Waititi] had us back again to kind of run that joke back and upgrade it a little bit.”

Despite being one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and in-demand performers, Damon has demonstrated a willingness to participate in quick, uncredited cameos, most notably in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move. Damon had previously featured in Ragnarok as a random Asgardian in a re-enactment of Loki’s purported death in the second film.

Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor, with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, and Christian Bale as the villain Gorr the God Butcher in “Thor: Love and Thunder” Jane Foster, a character from the previous two “Thor” films, will also be reprised by Natalie Portman.

During an interview with The Philadelphia Enquirer in May 2020, Hemsworth, 37, raved about the project’s storyline. He told the newspaper, “It’s one of the best scripts I’ve read in years. It’s Taika at his most extreme and at his best. If the version I read is the one we get running with, it’s going to be pretty insane.”

Hemsworth, who initially played the hammer-wielding god of thunder in 2011, has previously stated that he had no plans to leave the role.

In April 2019, Hemsworth told Variety’s and iHeartMedia’s podcast The Big Ticket, “There will come a day. Whether it’s now or in the future, I don’t know. … Who knows what the sort of future holds? I don’t know, there could be remakes, sequels, prequels — who knows?”

The fourth “Thor” film will be released in May 2022.
