Katy Perry Split Her Leather Pants During ‘American Idol’

The most recent American Idol broadcast had a wardrobe mishap involving Katy Perry.

During the latest episode she performed her hit 2010 song with co-hosts Lionel Richie, 75, and Luke Bryan, 45, and 134 contestants, as they kick off Hollywood Week’s genre challenge for episode seven.

Last season, contestants selected the musical style that best suited them and then selected their own song to compete against other singers in that style.

Katy tore the back of her red leather leggings when singing “Teenage Dream” during Hollywood Week, and you could really hear the cloth tearing.

The bottoms were lace-up at the front and were low enough to show a slither of her stomach.

It was paired with a low-cut sleeveless top that had a square neckline that showed off her ample cleavage.

Fittingly, she was singing about her “skintight jeans” when her red leather trousers ripped open.

“They busted,” fellow judge Luke Bryan joked, as Perry came up with a quick fix for her sartorial stumble.

“Can I get some tape?” she asked the crew.

Fortunately, TAPE WAS ON HAND and a bunch of people + Luke helped Katy put her pants back together, because the show must go on, etc.

While Katy’s pants were undergoing a makeshift repair, Lionel very aptly sung his song Stuck On You.

Please note this is not the first time Katy has split her pants on American Idol. It’s basically a tradition at this point, and as People notes, the first pants-ripping happened in 2018, prompting Lionel Richie to cover Katy while yelling “OH NOOOOO” and a crew member to come tape her up.

The songwriter sported a chopped haircut that was bleached and wore a silver sequined one-sleeved jumpsuit.

That time around the music artist had been seated when her outfit tore in two.

She let out a raucous laugh before abruptly stopping and exclaiming, ‘I just split my pants!’

She jumped up and turned to show the audience the tear, which had to be covered for TV viewers.

Ahead of her latest side- (or, rather, seam-) splitting moment, Perry took to Instagram to show off her outfit, which included a vintage leopard-print Just Cavalli corset top, zebra-striped Bottega Veneta sandals and Ben-Amun jewelry in addition to her lace-up Drome pants.

Along with two photos of her wearing the outfit from the new episode she said, ‘Don’t let the Monday blues get you down, #americanidol is on tonight and it’s #hollywoodweek babes.’

She incorporated cat and orange heart emojis and racked up over 200,000 likes from her 156 million followers.

It’s no surprise Perry took the onscreen style slip in stride — as she recently told Page Six Style, “I take fashion risks all the time, but I never have any regrets.”
