Was Spencer Tracy bisexual?

Spencer Tracy was a renowned film star of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

He was married to Louise and had two children, however, the couple became estranged but never officially divorced, as Tracy cited his Catholic upbringing as the reason for not doing so.

Tracy had a reputation for excessive drinking and being a womanizer, with links to famous actresses such as Ingrid Bergman and Hedy Lamarr.

However, rumors suggest that he might have been bisexual and not just a womanizer as perceived.

He was often seen staying at George Cukor’s house, who was openly gay and directed “The Philadelphia Story” and “My Fair Lady,” for several days at a time.

According to sources, Tracy was involved in intimate relationships with Cukor’s young male friends.

Additionally, there were rumors of Tracy being in a long-term relationship with actor John Derek.

Scotty Bowers, who was a pimp to stars during the Golden Age, in his memoir, shed new light on the relationship between Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.

Bowers referred to it as a “pseudo-romance,” which was engineered by the studio and never consummated.

Tracy, in fact, despised Hepburn, as he told Bowers that she treated him with contempt.

According to Bowers, Tracy was a generous and good-hearted man who liked to cuddle after drinking, but did not engage in such behavior with Hepburn.

Bowers himself recounts his first encounter with Tracy in the early 1950s, in his memoir.

He writes, “It was past midnight. After another empty bottle of scotch stood on the coffee table, he began to undress and begged me not to leave him.”

Bowers continued, “I could only assume that his pseudo-romance with Kate Hepburn was causing him distress… I climbed into bed with him… he lay his head down at my groin, took hold of my penis… this was the last guy on earth that I expected an overture like that from, but we had an hour or so of pretty good sex.”

In the morning, Tracy acted as if nothing had happened. However, Bowers reveals that this was just the first of many similar encounters.

He further states, “I met a lot of influential people through Spence.”

It is still not clear if Tracy was indeed bisexual or if these rumors and accounts are just gossip from that era.

Nevertheless, Spencer Tracy remains one of the most beloved and respected actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
