How 10-year-old Brooke Shields posed for Playboy

Actress Brooke Shields, who rose to fame at the age of 12 for her role in Louis Malle’s 1976 film Pretty Baby, had previously posed for a nud_ photoshoot at the age of 10.

Brooke had been modeling since infancy, and in 1975, the photographer Garry Gross took a series of nude photos of her for Sugar and Spice, a book published by Playboy Press.

The shoot was edgy, with Brooke posing in a marble bathtub while glistening with oil and heavy makeup.

The pictures were arranged in different positions around the bathtub, sometimes clutching a flower, while maintaining serious eye contact with the camera.

The legality of the shoot rested with Brooke’s mother, Terri Shields, who consented to it for a payment of $450.

Gross retained official ownership over the photos, and both parties agreed to the deal for a while.

However, when Brooke became famous after the release of Pretty Baby, Gross stood to make a killing with the rare, naked photographs.

Brooke sued Gross in 1981, alleging that the work was harmful to her reputation, and obtained a temporary ban on their use.

In 1983, Judge Edward Greenfield ruled in Gross’ favor, saying that an underage model cannot disaffirm a guardian’s prior consent under section 51 of the Civil Rights Law.

In 1998, Gross displayed the photos in an exhibition with American Fine Arts, which was met with further protest.

In artist statements released around that time, Gross confirmed the intent of arousal with his images.

He even went on to compare the work’s sensuality to the moment that “a four-year-old girl asked him for something ‘with a certain flirtatiousness, coquettishness.’”

Richard Prince, an artist who re-photographed famous photographs, utilized Gross’ pictures of Brooke in his 1983 work Spiritual America, which was also met with controversy.

Brooke’s career involved several instances of sexualization beyond her years, including her innuendo-laden commercials for Calvin Klein at the age of 15.

In the commercials, she famously said “You want to know what gets between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”

The same year, Brooke starred in the highly anticipated Blue Lagoon as a young nymphette, alongside 18-year-old actor Christopher Atkins, in a sexual storyline.

However, a 32-year-old stunt coordinator named Kathy Troutt served as Brooke’s body double for the nude scenes.

Brooke’s mother, Terri Shields, was determined to make her daughter a star and had a significant role in managing her career.

Brooke had first appeared in an ad for Ivory Soap at a young age, shot by the famed fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo.
