“That ’70s Show” actor on trial for 3 rape charges

Danny Masterson, former star of “That ’70s Show,” has been charged with three counts of rape by force or fear, dating back to 2001-2003.

The three women accusing Masterson of rape are all former members of the Church of Scientology, which Masterson himself is still a part of.

All three women initially hesitated to go to authorities due to the Church’s practice of handling problems between members internally.

However, the Church’s role in the case will be limited in court, though it will likely be discussed as a reason why the women waited so long to report the rapes.

Opening statements in Masterson’s trial began in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with Masterson pleading not guilty to the charges.

Masterson’s initial lawyer in the case, Thomas Mesereau, claimed that his client’s arrest was the result of anti-religious bias by police and prosecutors.

Masterson’s current lead attorney, Phillip Cohen, is attempting to minimize mentions of the Church of Scientology during the trial.

Potential jurors with negative opinions of the Church have already been dismissed.

At the preliminary hearing last year, one of Masterson’s accusers claimed that she woke up to Masterson raping her in 2001, after they had been in a relationship for five years.

Another accuser testified that Masterson raped her in his bedroom in 2003, and the third woman claimed Masterson raped her in 2003 after inviting her to his house.

Masterson’s former girlfriend filed a police report in 2004 but did not press charges at the time.

It was only in 2016, after she connected with one of Masterson’s other accusers, that she filed another police report.

Masterson’s second accuser also filed a police report that year, and the third woman reported the rape to police in 2017.

Masterson’s previous attorneys suggested in cross-examination that the women had retroactively reframed consensual s^x as rape, and that their memories of the incidents were not accurate.

The trial is taking place at the same time as Harvey Weinstein’s second rape and sexual assault trial, as well as civil trials for actor Kevin Spacey and screenwriter/director Paul Haggis, who are both being sued for sexual assault.

Haggis himself is a Scientology dissident, and the judge in his case is allowing him to argue that the Church is behind the allegations against him.

Masterson starred as Steven Hyde on “That ’70s Show” from 1998 until 2006, alongside Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Topher Grace.

He later reunited with Kutcher on the Netflix series “The Ranch” but was written off the show in 2017 when the LAPD investigation became public.
