Actress Constance Wu details rape ordeal
Actress Constance Wu has revealed that she was raped on a date earlier in her career.
In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir “Making a Scene” published in Vanity Fair, Wu describes how she ignored a “twinge of warning” in her gut over an invitation to go to her date Ty’s apartment after dinner.
Wu noted that Ty did not look threatening or shady, and when they became intimate, he did not stop once she asked him to.
Wu writes, “some people might say that I should have fought back against Ty…Because when I think about the girl I was back then, I understand what she was going through”.
Wu’s realization of the assault hit her years later after filming “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018.

She said, “maybe it wasn’t violent, but it was rape…Ty raped me. He raped me, and I hadn’t done anything about it.”
The excerpt comes after The New York Times reported that Wu had also opened up in her book about being sexually harassed by a “Fresh Off the Boat” staff member.
Speaking at an Atlantic Panel festival, Wu elaborated on the reveal saying, “I kept my mouth shut for a really long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received the first two seasons of the show”.
Wu also revealed that she had attempted suicide over hateful DMs after stepping back from social media platforms.
Wu has faced massive social media backlash before when she expressed her anger over the renewal of “Fresh Off the Boat” in 2019.
Despite being “afraid of coming back on social media”, Wu has been “dipping her toe back” in since July.
Wu’s memoir is set to be released on May 11 and will provide an insight into the actress’s rise to fame, including her role in the box office hit “Crazy Rich Asians”.
She has been promoting her book through interviews and social media posts, giving readers a glimpse into her life and career.
Wu began her acting career in 2006 and is best known for her roles in “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Crazy Rich Asians”.
She has received critical acclaim for her performances in both television and film, including a Golden Globe nomination for “Fresh Off the Boat” in 2019.
Wu has also been a vocal advocate for Asian American representation in the entertainment industry.
She has spoken out against whitewashing and called for more opportunities for Asian actors and actresses in Hollywood.
