The Bodyguard remake will have ‘young Latina’ in Whitney Houston’s starring role

“The Bodyguard” is the latest great film to be rebooted, and fans are polarized.

The Tony Award-winning writer of The Inheritance, Matthew López, is scheduled to pen the script for the Warner Bros. adaptation of the acclaimed 1992 film, which also featured Kevin Costner.

López recently announced that his new script for The Bodyguard will have a “young Latina” character in the lead role, taking over for Whitney Houston.

The new film will be based on the 1992 love drama starring Houston and Kevin Costner, which contained the smash hit “And I Will Always Love You.” The original picture grossed more than $400 million at the box office globally. The soundtrack is still regarded as one of the best-selling film soundtracks of all time.

“It’s so much fun,” López said of the experience of remaking the picture for current audiences. “When Warner Bros. approached me about the idea, I quickly said I would but I wanted the protagonist to be Latina. They agreed to that.”

‘There’s been a lot of speculation about what I’d bring to the remake and some people were assuming that there’d be a gay storyline to it.’

He explained: ‘Instead of focusing on an established star like the one Whitney Houston played, this is about a young Latina performer who has just become famous. It was important to me to use this opportunity to get Latin faces up on that screen and to get their stories told in a big way.’

‘It’s about how her life has changed because she is an overnight sensation. In the 21st century, that means she’s in immediate need of protection.’

In the original film, Houston played Rachel Marron, an Oscar-nominated actress who employs a bodyguard (Costner) to protect her after getting threatening texts from a stalker.

Some fans of the original were not pleased when the news broke on Twitter. Others chimed in with casting suggestions.

‘Why?’ one user tweeted. ‘There are so many writers and content creators out there with original ideas that need to be funded and seen. We don’t need to recreate things like The Bodyguard that had cultural impact and people will watch over and over. (yes this movie had cultural impact fight me) LOL’

‘The music/soundtrack is the star of the Bodyguard movie and who’s gonna top prime Whitney Houston?’ said another.

‘Beyoncé for the The Bodyguard remake would be astonishing musically but people be way to weird when it comes to her. I genuinely don’t think I could live through something like that, especially after Black Is King,’ another suggested.

Lizzo joked earlier this month that she should co-star in the film with her TikTok crush Chris Evans.

Lizzo used the famous “What are we talking about?” trend in a TikTok video.

The video begins with Lizzo “holding” a tweet announcing the remake and making a puzzled look while mouthing along to an angry voiceover asking, “What are we talking about?” The scene then shifts to her “holding” a tweet stating that she and Evans should co-star in the film.

“What y’all think?” Lizzo captioned the video. accompanied with a side-smirk emoji

The plot contrasts from the original film, which depicted Whitney’s character Rachel as a well-established singer with international acclaim.

In a recent interview with EW, Costner delivered a bombshell about the original film’s poster.

“That wasn’t even Whitney actually,” Costner told EW. “She had gone home and that was her double, and her head was buried into my shoulder, which was appropriate anyway. She was frightened.”
