Halle Berry Jokes About Recent Catwoman Praise: ‘Where Were You Guys 17 Years Ago?’

Halle Berry made waves when she responded to the praise for her movie “Catwoman.” Berry is here for all of the recent adulation for her performance as Catwoman in 2004. Even if it is 17 years too late.

The actress, 55, joked on Twitter about people finding the 2004 film in which she played both the title character and her everyday alter ego, Patience Phillips. The film is now available to watch on HBO Max.

When Catwoman was first released, critics branded it “one of the worst films ever.” “Catwoman” only grossed $82.1 million worldwide, despite a $100 million budget.

Several fans of the character have taken to Twitter to recall a prior iteration after Zoe Kravitz’s casting in the role.

The daughter of Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz will play Catwoman in The Batman, a new film starring Robert Pattinson.

“Catwoman” follows Berry’s character Patience Phillips, an artist who worked for a cosmetics firm before being murdered by the company’s associates after finding the corporation’s new dangerous product. She was eventually resurrected by Egyptian cats, which bestowed upon her cat-like abilities, which she used to battle crime in the city. Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt, and Frances Conroy also appeared in the picture.

“I’m sorry but Halle Berry ate her Catwoman role up, idk why ppl hate that movies, it’s camp. I love it,” one fan said on Twitter.

Berry responded: “I’m seeing all the Catwoman love, everybody. Where were you guys 17 years ago,” adding a crying-laughing emoji at the end of her tweet.

Catwoman was directed by Pitof, a French filmmaker.

Many other people commented on how young they were when the film initially came out after Berry’s post went viral. While a few others agreed with the Twitter user’s prior views, claiming the actress did the role justice.

“I blame the script. Sis did a good job.”

“She bodied ‘Catwoman’ idk what y’all talkin bout.”

“I’m telling you I loved ‘Catwoman.’”

“She bodied that role! People always tryna NOT acknowledge greatness.. smh.”

While Berry has an Oscar, Catwoman was not the picture that garnered her the honor.

Catwoman was called “tired and dated” at the time of its debut, with The Hollywood Reporter saying that “the scripted dialogue makes you long for a mute button.” It has a 9 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Berry even received a Razzie Award for her work in Catwoman, which is presented to the year’s worst performances and projects at a satirical ceremony.

She held her Razzie award in one hand and the Oscar she had won for Monster’s Ball three years before in the other.

‘Thank you guys, thank you so much,’ she vamped, her voice heaving with faux emotion: ‘I never in my life thought I would be up here winning a Razzie!’

In her winning speech, the actress playfully praised Warner Brothers for casting her in a “God awful” film. She “First of all, I want to thank Warner Brothers. Thank you for putting me in a piece of s–t, God awful movie.”

Berry said, “You know it was just what my career needed. I was at the top and then “Catwoman” just plummeted me to the bottom, love it. It’s hard being on top; it’s much better being on the bottom.”

She joked in 2018 that her Catwoman role deserved another chance after the very unfavorable reception it had upon its initial release.

“Each story builds on the next. It’s like that old saying goes: behind every black panther is a great black catwoman!” she said at the 2018 GLAAD media awards. “You know, I’ve gotten a really bad rap for this role, and I think Catwoman deserves another god—- chance, don’t you?”
