Brie Larson says she felt ‘ugly and like an outcast’ in the past due to high beauty standards
Brie Larson is opening up about her struggles with self-esteem in the past.
The 31-year-old actress recently spoke with W magazine on how unrealistic beauty standards influenced her in the past.
“I don’t believe that there is a beauty standard. I struggled with feeling ugly and like an outcast for so much of my life,” she said. “And so I really, really feel for that. It took me a long time to be able to be totally comfortable with myself.”
The actress went on to say that what gives her “solace” is that she “can be whoever I want to be with myself.”
“What breaks my heart is to think of people in the world who don’t feel that they have safety within their own bodies. That, to me, is my ultimate goal in life: to do whatever it is that I can so people have the freedom to express themselves and be exactly who it is that they want to be – whatever that is – knowing that that can also change.”

One of her most well-known roles is that of Captain Marvel, although she also revealed that she initially turned down the position. The Academy Award winner recounted the audition process, stating she rejected Marvel Studio’s offer several times.
Larson stated, “Oh, I can’t do that. I have too much anxiety. That’s too much for me. I don’t think I could handle that,” in reference to the magnitude and popularity of Marvel movies.
“I’m too much of an introvert. That’s way too big of a thing for me,” she recalled. “It was beyond my comprehension.”
Larson first stated that she was working on ‘Kong: Skull Island’ alongside Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson when first approached about the role, but didn’t inform anyone (not even her mother) about the phone conversation.
After the film was completed, she met with the Marvel team and acknowledged she was touched by what they were trying to do and what they were discussing.
“It felt very progressive.”
“I was very surprised by the way that they were talking about feminism and the way they were handling it,” she added. “They were like all female writers. Female director. Going to have as many female voices in this as possible.”
Brie Larson recently launched a YouTube channel to engage with her followers and play Animal Crossing. She also discussed the several cinematic roles she pursued.
“I didn’t get Gossip Girl, and I’m really glad. I auditioned for Hunger Games, and I didn’t get it. I auditioned for Tomorrowland, and I didn’t get it. I auditioned for all of the new Star Wars movies, and I didn’t get it,” she said. “I don’t even know why I’m saying I didn’t get it. Like, you know I didn’t.”
“The ones from when I was a kid really, really still sting,” she said. “Like it was down to me and another girl for Smart House, the Disney Channel Original Movie, and I didn’t get it. That was a big bummer.”
“Spy Kids!” she added. “I mean, did I have any business even auditioning for Spy Kids? Absolutely not. Did I want to be a child spy? Definitely.”
