Pregnant Nicole Kidman was replaced by Kate Winslet in ‘The Reader’
Kate Winslet has been chosen to replace Nicole Kidman in the movie “The Reader,” after Kidman had to leave the project due to her pregnancy.
People magazine reported that Winslet had originally been offered the role but couldn’t commit to it because of scheduling conflicts with another project.
A source quoted by People said, “Kate was offered it first before Nicole but couldn’t do it but the dates clashed with commitments to Revolutionary Road.
So the dates changed, Nicole then got pregnant and now it has come back to Kate.”
“The Reader” is based on Bernhard Schlink’s 1995 best-selling novel and tells the story of a teenage boy’s affair with an older woman in post-World War II Germany.

The film also stars Ralph Fiennes.
Winslet’s selection for the role comes as no surprise, as the actress has won critical acclaim for her work in other period pieces, such as “Sense and Sensibility,” “Titanic,” and “The Dressmaker.”
Kidman’s pregnancy was announced earlier this year, leading to her departure from the project.
She is currently expecting her third child with husband Keith Urban.
Winslet and Kidman are no strangers to competing for the same roles.
The two actresses were both considered for the role of Satine in the film “Moulin Rouge!” before it ultimately went to Kidman.
“The Reader” was directed by Stephen Daldry, who also directed Winslet in “The Hours,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Winslet’s other upcoming projects include “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” and the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown.”
